GUNMEN KILL HEALTH WORKER IN ONDO STATE
A 46-year-old health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, was reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen near Akure Airport at Eleyowo in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, sending shockwaves through the community.
According to a family member who spoke on condition of anonymity, Oyabiyi was attacked by the gunmen while returning home from work. The source revealed that the health worker was shot in the belly and died shortly after.
The family member described the incident, saying, “The incident happened on Tuesday at about 8 pm when he was going home. The people attacked him. I think they were trying to kidnap him.” The source added that the gunmen emerged from the bush and shot Oyabiyi in his car.
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with the Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, stating that the command is investigating the matter. Odunlami said, “We are on top of the matter, and will get back to you soon.”
The body of the deceased has been deposited at a hospital morgue, as the police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Oyabiyi’s death.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks in the Akure North Local Government Area. Recently, a farm manager and two industrial training students were abducted at Oke Oge in the Oba Ile community.
In a related development, five farm workers were shot dead by suspected gunmen in the same area. The abductors of the farm manager have reportedly contacted the family of the victim, demanding a ransom of N15 million.
The spate of attacks in the area has raised concerns about the safety of residents and the need for increased security measures. The police have assured the public that they are working to apprehend the perpetrators and restore peace to the area.
As the investigation into Oyabiyi’s death continues, the family and friends of the deceased are mourning the loss of a loved one. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public to prevent such tragedies.
