A devastating road crash occurred on Thursday along the Third Mainland Bridge, involving a commercial bus and a private car. Fortunately, 14 commuters escaped death in the accident, which happened at the Iyana-Oworonshoki area of the bridge.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the accident was caused by excessive speeding by the commercial driver. This led to a loss of control and the eventual collision with the private car.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) swiftly responded to the emergency, rescuing the 14 accident victims. The incident involved a Mazda commercial bus (XN 997 KTU) that collided with a moving Toyota Yaris (11150 DLA).
Taofiq stated that the impact of the collision led to multiple casualties, necessitating an immediate emergency response. LASTMA officers, in collaboration with the Lagos State Ambulance Service, acted quickly to extricate the victims from the wreckage.
The rescued victims, including the commercial bus driver, were taken to the Gbagada General Hospital for immediate medical attention. The Lagos ambulance team transported them to the hospital, where they received treatment for their injuries.
Reacting to the incident, the LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended sympathies to the injured victims. He stressed the need for speed limit compliance among drivers to avert needless road fatalities.
Bakare-Oki underscored the importance of complying with officially sanctioned speed limits, emphasizing that this is crucial for both commercial and private motorists. He wished the injured victims a swift and complete recovery.
