The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old prophet, Abimbolu Oluwafemi, of the Cherubim and Seraphim church in Ijebu Igbo, for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl. According to the Command’s Spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, the prophet committed the crime under the guise of performing a spiritual cleansing.
The victim’s mother, a member of the prophet’s congregation, reported the incident at the Ijebu Igbo Divisional Police Station. She stated that the prophet had convinced her that a spiritual bath was necessary to avert a prophesied calamity in her daughter’s future. The mother’s trust in the prophet proved to be a fatal mistake, as he allegedly took advantage of the minor during the spiritual bath at a riverbank.
Odutola explained that the suspect had deceitfully gained the mother’s trust, exploiting her religious beliefs for his own advantage. The police spokesperson warned parents and guardians to remain vigilant and protect their children from individuals of questionable character.
Upon receiving the report, officers from the Gender Department of the Ogun State Police Command swiftly arrested the suspect. The victim was referred to Medicare Hospital, Ijebu Igbo, where medical evidence is being gathered to aid the ongoing investigation.
Odutola noted that findings indicated a disturbing level of neglect and lack of parental caution. She emphasized the need for parents to be more cautious when entrusting their children to others, especially those who use their position of authority to exploit vulnerable individuals.
