Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has alleged threats to his life following his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in his new year message. Obi’s allegation comes after Felix Morka, national spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated that “Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times and has it coming to him whatever he gets”.
In his new year press conference, Obi lamented the deteriorating political, economic, and security situation in Nigeria. He expressed concerns over the rising poverty levels, with over 100 million people living in extreme poverty and more than 150 million in multidimensional poverty.
Obi criticized the current administration, stating that Nigeria has fallen from being the largest economy in Africa to ranking fourth on the continent. He noted that the country’s GDP has declined significantly, from $574 billion in 2014 to approximately $200 billion currently.
Reacting to Morka’s statement, Obi asked if he has “really crossed the line” after receiving threats against his life, family, and associates. He challenged anyone who thinks he has crossed the line to point it out to him, expressing his commitment to upholding decorum.
Obi vowed not to be silenced in his resolve to speak truthfully, especially as the country “drifts toward undemocratic practices.” He expressed concerns over the increasing authoritarianism and repression in Nigeria, where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed.
The former governor’s allegations have sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians. Some have expressed support for Obi, condemning the alleged threats against him. Others have criticized Obi, accusing him of being “petty” and “attention-seeking.”
