Following the recent stampede in Ibadan that resulted in the loss of 35 lives, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) when distributing palliative aid. Governor Abiodun made this statement during a visit to Oyo State Governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde, in his office in Ibadan.
The governor’s visit was a condolence call to the people of Oyo State, and he was representing himself, the government, and the good people of Ogun State, as well as the Southern Governors’ Forum (SGF). He expressed his sadness over the unfortunate incident, which occurred on Wednesday, December 18th, and described it as a “good initiative turned sour” ¹.
Governor Abiodun noted that similar incidents had occurred in Anambra and Abuja during the yuletide period, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach to prevent such tragedies. He emphasized that when private sector players, NGOs, and charities work with the government, they can ensure that initiatives are well-planned and executed, minimizing the risk of chaotic situations.
The governor stressed that the government has a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens, particularly during times of crisis. He urged NGOs and charitable organizations to involve the government in their initiatives to prevent a repeat of the Ibadan stampede.
In response to Governor Abiodun’s visit, Governor Makinde appreciated his Ogun State counterpart for his condolences and emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two states. He proposed a Peer Review meeting between the two states next year to share ideas and best practices.
The Southern Governors’ Forum, chaired by Governor Abiodun, has expressed its pain over the loss of lives in Ibadan and reiterated its commitment to supporting the people of Oyo State.
Governor Abiodun prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and for the families to bear the loss. He also wished the people of Oyo State a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
