A devastating fire has gutted Duchess Lounge, a popular spot for socialites in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital. The fire, which occurred on a day when the dry weather was prevalent, left the establishment in ruins.
Eyewitnesses speculate that a sudden power surge may have sparked the blaze, which quickly spread throughout the lounge. Although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, it is clear that the damage was extensive.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene, reported that the entire first floor of the lounge was completely destroyed. All furniture, sound systems, and other valuables were reduced to ashes. The lounge, which was a prominent hub for relaxation and entertainment, is now a shadow of its former self.
The owner of the lounge, Joseph Kunini, a former Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, expressed his shock at the incident. “It is a sad development and a huge loss, but we thank God no lives were lost,” he said. Kunini revealed that the lounge had just undergone a comprehensive renovation, including new furniture, in preparation for its third anniversary on December 30.
The lounge manager, Desmond Wee, revealed that despite contacting the fire service as soon as the fire broke out, they arrived three hours later, by which time the damage had already been done. The delay in the fire service’s response has raised questions about the state’s preparedness to handle emergencies.
The incident has left many patrons and residents in Jalingo shocked, as Duchess Lounge was a beloved gathering place for the community. The lounge’s destruction is not only a loss for the owner but also for the many people who frequented the establishment.
