Godwin Uzodinma, a middle-aged man, has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl. Uzodinma was arraigned on two counts of sexual assault by penetration and defilement at the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja.
The Lagos State Government preferred the charges against Uzodinma, who pleaded not guilty. Judge Rahman Oshodi granted him bail in the sum of N50 million with two sureties, also in the sum of N50 million.
The sureties must be gainfully employed and provide evidence of two years’ tax payment to the state. Their addresses must be verified by the court registrar, and Uzodinma must surrender his passport.
Judge Oshodi emphasized that the charges are severe and Uzodinma may flee trial. The case has been adjourned until February 19, 2025.
Lagos State counsel Bukola Okeowo stated that Uzodinma committed the offenses in 2017 and 2019 on Shogunle Street, Ikeja. Okeowo alleged that Uzodinma had unlawful sexual intercourse with the minor, violating Sections 137 and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
These sections carry life imprisonment if convicted. The Lagos State Government has demonstrated its commitment to combating sexual violence through the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) [1).
