A shocking case of alleged rape has shaken the community in Sabie, Mpumalanga, South Africa. Pastor Sydney Sithole, 46, was denied bail by the Sabie Magistrate Court on Thursday following accusations of raping a 16-year-old congregant member.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) successfully opposed Sithole’s release on bail, citing concerns that he might evade trial, interfere with witnesses, or cause public disorder. The court also noted that Sithole failed to provide exceptional circumstances warranting his release.
According to reports, the alleged incident occurred in October 2024 at Sithole’s residence, where the victim had sought prayer for a leg injury. Instead, Sithole allegedly welcomed her, kissed her, and pushed her into his bedroom before committing the heinous act.
The victim confided in friends at school, who shared similar experiences, prompting the matter to be reported to the police. During Sithole’s arrest, authorities discovered a firearm and ammunition in his possession.
Sithole faces charges of rape, possession of a firearm, and ammunition. The court emphasized that he had breached the trust placed in him as a spiritual leader.
Monica Nyuswa, NPA Regional Spokesperson in Mpumalanga, stated, “The NPA, together with the police, will ensure the outstanding investigation is finalized and transferred to the trial court.”
