Tragedy struck in Anambra State, Nigeria’s South-east, when a police operative fatally shot a commercial bus driver. The incident occurred on Saturday in Otuocha, Anambra East Local Government Area.
According to sources, the driver, Kamtochukwu, refused to pay a N100 bribe at a checkpoint, sparking an intense argument with the officer.
The altercation ended in tragedy when the operative allegedly shot Kamtochukwu. A source revealed that the officer and driver engaged in a heated exchange before the fatal shot was fired.
This incident follows a similar shooting two weeks prior, where Police Inspector Joseph Ozonwanji killed Nigerian musician Chikezie Okezie Mba at the Enugu State Police Command’s Anti-Cult Unit.
Community youths, outraged by the incident, assembled to attack the police team but were thwarted when the personnel quickly drove away.
Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and identified the operative as Inspector Sani Sulieman, attached to Otuocha Divisional Police Headquarters.
Ikenga, a superintendent of police, assured that the Police Command is investigating the matter.
The incident raises concerns about police brutality and extortion in Nigeria, highlighting the need for accountability and reform within law enforcement agencies.
