The Nigerian Senate is gearing up to screen seven ministerial nominees on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged the Senate to consider and confirm the nominees in a letter last Thursday.

– Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda – Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction
– Muhammadu Dingyadi – Ministry of Labour & Employment
– Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu – Ministry of State Foreign Affairs
– Dr. Jumoke Oduwole – Industry, Trade, and Investment
– Idi Mukhtar Maiha – Livestock Development
– Yusuf Ata – State, Housing, and Urban Development
– Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad – Ministry of State Education
Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, a former ambassador to Spain and prominent member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is among the nominees. If confirmed, she would become the second member from an opposition party to join the Federal Executive Council, strengthening opposition representation in the cabinet.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, referred the list to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative deliberation. Senator Basheer Lado, Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, confirmed that the nominees have commenced the documentation process.
“The nominees are currently submitting the required documents as the first step in the series of procedures for their screening and confirmation by the Senate,” Lado stated.
This action aligns with Section 147 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended), which mandates Senate confirmation of ministerial appointments.
The outcome of the screening will be closely watched, given the key figures and technocrats expected to occupy crucial ministerial roles.
