Nigerian Senator Oyelola Ashiru, representing Kwara South, has confirmed that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) raided his residence in Ilorin. However, he denies allegations of finding hard drugs or other illegal substances during the operation.
The NDLEA’s allegations emerged shortly after Senator Ashiru criticized the agency for alleged corruption during a Senate debate. The senator questioned the agency’s effectiveness and highlighted the need for reform.
Senator Ashiru disowned two aides, Ibrahim Mohammed and Mohammed Yahaya, who were arrested by the NDLEA for alleged drug involvement. He stated that these individuals do not work for him directly or indirectly.
The senator’s office issued a statement, labeling the allegations as “wrong and fallacious.” The statement emphasized the absurdity of the timing, suggesting the NDLEA’s actions were retaliatory.
According to the statement, the NDLEA found no incriminating evidence during the raid. The entire house was searched, and nothing suspicious was discovered.
Senator Ashiru refuted claims that he attempted to influence the NDLEA to drop drug allegations against anyone, specifically mentioning that he had no connection to an individual named Tosin Odepidian.
The senator criticized the NDLEA for engaging in a “media trial” and urged the agency to charge any suspects to court rather than making unverified public allegations.
Senator Ashiru remains committed to serving the people of Kwara South and promoting professionalism among law enforcement agencies, according to his office.
