The Rivers State Police Command has detained a police corporal and members of his team following the shooting death of a 22-year-old University of Port Harcourt graduate in Port Harcourt.
The officer, identified as Corporal Alfred Louis, is being questioned at the State Criminal Investigation Department over the death of Anthony Obodo, who was reportedly shot during an altercation on August 27, 2026.
According to the Police Command, an argument between Obodo and the officer escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the corporal’s firearm was discharged.
Obodo sustained gunshot injuries and later died, while two other passers-by were also reportedly injured in the incident.
The development sparked anger at the scene, with an irate mob allegedly attacking Corporal Louis and leaving him with multiple injuries.
The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe Kaborlo, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday.
The Command described the shooting as condemnable, stressing that the conduct allegedly displayed by the officer was inconsistent with the standards of professional policing.
The Police said Corporal Louis and members of his team had been detained to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Command further assured the public that the officer would face appropriate disciplinary measures if investigations establish his culpability.
It also said no officer found to have engaged in unethical conduct would be shielded from accountability, particularly where such conduct could undermine public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
Obodo was said to have been a recent graduate of the University of Port Harcourt.
