The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking an order to prevent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku’s suit centres on an alleged discrepancy in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate reportedly submitted by Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The plaintiffs alleged that the certificate bears the name “Tinubu Bola Adekunle,” rather than the President’s name, “Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
They are asking the court to determine whether the alleged difference in names on the document affects Tinubu’s constitutional eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The suit also raises questions concerning provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 relating to the qualification of presidential candidates.
Atiku and the other plaintiffs are seeking judicial interpretation of the issues surrounding the alleged certificate discrepancy and its implications for Tinubu’s eligibility ahead of the 2027 election.
The case places the authenticity and relevance of the disputed NYSC document before the court for determination.
