The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun I Area Command, has seized smuggled goods with a total duty-paid value of 3.57 billion naira, including foreign rice, cannabis, petroleum products, clothing and other prohibited items.
the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller, Olukayode Afeni, who spoke to journalists at the Command’s headquarters in idiroko area of the state, said The seizures were recorded as part of the Command’s intensified operations against smuggling along the Ogun border corridors.
Among the items seized were 2,339 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 70 cartons of basmati rice, 6,035 parcels of Ghana Loud/Indica, 30 bags of foreign sugar, 11,450 litres of Premium Motor Spirit in kegs, 1,750 litres of PMS in drums, 30 kegs of diesel, 100 bags of fertilizer and 67 bales of second-hand clothing.
Other seized items included cosmetics, hair accessories, new clothing, purses, fire extinguishers, drinks and other prohibited goods.
The custom boss however warned smugglers and those involved in the illegal importation of drugs that the Customs Service will continue to use intelligence, technology and inter-agency cooperation to track their activities.
According to him, the Command has, from January 2026 to date, handed over 32,412 parcels of hard drugs and 92 sacks of raw Cannabis sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Idiroko Special Command.
He therefore urged Nigerians to support locally produced rice and other agricultural products, saying buying locally produced goods will help create jobs and strengthen the Nigerian economy, while calling on traditional rulers, youth leaders and residents along border communities to assist security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.
Receiving the seized narcotics, Wole Fagbohun, Deputy Commandant, NDLEA Idiroko Special Area Command, said the gesture demonstrates the importance of inter-agency collaboration in the fight against illicit drugs, trafficking and drug abuse, particularly within border communities.
He assured that the substances will be properly documented, investigated and handled in accordance with the established procedures.
