The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi has reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing after operatives arrested five suspects and recovered three pump-action guns during separate anti-crime operations across the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, disclosed the development in a statement, saying the operations underscored the command’s resolve to clamp down on criminal activities and illegal possession of firearms.
According to the statement, operatives attached to the C Division, Asaba, intercepted one Joseph Tyavzua during a stop-and-search operation along the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway. The suspect was allegedly found in possession of a pump-action gun while attempting to enter Onitsha, Anambra State, on a commercial motorcycle.
Police said the suspect claimed to be a member of a vigilante group but could not produce any lawful authorisation for possessing the firearm.
In a separate operation, operatives of the Ekpan Police Division arrested four other suspects following a report of the armed robbery of a commercial motorcycle rider. Two additional pump-action guns were recovered from the suspects during the operation.
The police said all five suspects are currently in custody at the Ekpan and Asaba police divisions, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the suspected criminal syndicate.
Oyeniyi commended the officers involved in the operations for their professionalism and successful arrests, reiterating the command’s determination to sustain intelligence-driven operations aimed at protecting lives and property across Delta State.
