The Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) is mourning the death of its Organising Secretary, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, who died after sustaining gunshot wounds in an attack by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.
Ajiboye was reportedly attacked on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi. The assailants were said to have intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor and opened fire, leaving the vehicle riddled with bullet holes.
Although initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack with injuries, later reports confirmed that the union official succumbed to his wounds.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the Lagos NURTW, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye’s death as a painful loss.
In a tribute shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Sego said the late union leader was a loyal ally, dependable friend and committed member whose contributions to the union and its political structure would not be forgotten.
He described Ajiboye as a pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation, noting that his unwavering loyalty, friendship and dedication to the union would remain an enduring legacy.
Sego also extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and members of the NURTW, praying for God to grant him eternal rest and comfort those grieving his loss.
The circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, and authorities have yet to announce any arrests or provide further details on the gunmen responsible.
