He pledged to incorporate the recommendations into his administration’s plans and programmes if elected governor in 2027.
Yayi maintained that he has sought Obasanjo’s support, blessings and guidance, adding that the former President spoke passionately about the future of the state and the need to keep it on the right track.
In his speech, the former President urged the APC governorship candidate to prioritise agribusiness, job creation, unity and purposeful leadership if elected governor in the 2027.
The former President said he had known Adeola over the years and admired his commitment to extending development to areas where it is needed.
Obasanjo maintained that, regardless of political affiliation, whoever emerges as governor of Ogun State would remain his governor, stressing that his interest is in the progress and development of the state.
According to him, Ogun State possesses enormous economic potential, particularly in agribusiness, which he described as a complete value chain extending from land preparation and mechanised farming to processing and food distribution.
He noted that the state’s proximity to Lagos, with its huge population, presents a unique opportunity for Ogun to become the food basket of the commercial capital while also exporting value-added agricultural products.
“I like the fact that you go out to reach places where there is need for development. That is very important”.
“If you are going to create employment for our youths, agribusiness is probably the most important sector. We should be able to feed Lagos and also make processed agricultural products one of our major exports,” he stated.
The elder statesman also identified tourism as another viable sector capable of boosting Ogun State’s economy, noting that the state’s cities are blessed with historical sites, arts and cultural attractions that could generate substantial revenue if properly developed.
Obasanjo also called for a review of the practice of adversarial politics inherited from Western liberal democracy, arguing that African traditional governance places greater emphasis on consensus and collective decision-making rather than treating the opposition as enemies.
He urged political leaders to embrace inclusive governance after elections, stressing that leaders must work with all citizens, irrespective of political differences.
He prayed that Adeola’s aspirations would align with God’s purpose and encouraged him to pursue his goals with determination.
The former President also reflected on his own career journey, recalling that although he had hoped to become a geologist, he eventually found fulfilment through a military career, which he described as God’s plan for his life.
Yayi later met with former Governor Ibikunle Amosun, whom he described as his political leader.
He said the visit formed part of ongoing consultations within the APC to strengthen unity ahead of the 2027 election.
According to the senator, Amosun assured him of his support and indicated that further consultations would continue before formally addressing the media.
Amosun in his speech stressed the importance of unity within the ruling party, saying members should work together rather than create divisions.
He noted that what the people desired most was good governance and urged party members and supporters to remain united.
The former governor also expressed appreciation to those who accompanied Adeola on the visit, saying the consultations would continue as preparations for the 2027 Ogun governorship election gather momentum.
