The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned the two-month delay in the disbursement of upkeep allowances under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, describing the situation as unacceptable and a direct assault on student welfare.
In a press release issued on 20th June 2026 and signed by NANS President, Dist. Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, GCNS, the student body said it received numerous complaints from beneficiaries across Nigeria who have not received their allowances since April.
Comrade Akinteye noted that the prolonged hold-up has created widespread anxiety among students who depend on the funds for transportation, feeding, and other basic needs. He stressed that the delay defeats the core purpose of NELFUND, which is to provide financial relief amid harsh economic realities.
“Without mincing words, the continued delay in the disbursement of these allowances is completely unacceptable,” the NANS President said. He argued that any policy meant to support students must be executed with transparency and urgency.
NANS is demanding immediate intervention from the Managing Director of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, and the Honourable Minister of Finance, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, to address all bottlenecks causing the delay.
The association called on the authorities to provide a clear explanation to Nigerian students and commence payment of all outstanding upkeep allowances without further delay. It said accountability is critical to maintaining trust in the loan scheme.
NANS warned that failure to act swiftly will force students to embark on peaceful mass action. The planned protest, it said, may include the occupation of the NELFUND Head Office until concrete steps are taken to resolve the issue.
Comrade Akinteye emphasized that the notice should not be seen as a threat but as a legitimate expression of frustration from thousands of students whose academic pursuits and daily survival are being affected by the delay.
The NANS President reaffirmed his commitment to defending students’ interests and amplifying their collective voice. He assured Nigerian students that the association will continue to push for transparency, accountability, and timely implementation of all education support programmes.
