The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has directed its members at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital to withdraw their services following the alleged assault of a female house officer on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at the hospital’s accident and emergency unit, where the doctor was attacked by a group of men reportedly from Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade. The attack is believed to be linked to the death of a patient who was treated at the hospital.
NARD has condemned the incident, describing it as a gross violation of human dignity and the safety of healthcare workers. The association is demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved in the attack.
“The safety of doctors is non-negotiable,” NARD stated in a release. “Hospitals are sanctuaries of healing, not battlegrounds of violence. We will not tolerate any form of violence against our members.”
The doctors’ withdrawal of services is effective immediately, with NARD warning that failure to meet their demands could lead to nationwide escalation. The association has also called on the management of Gateway ICT Polytechnic to collaborate with security agencies to apprehend the suspects and take responsibility for their actions.
The Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital’s management and police have yet to comment on the incident. The development has sparked concerns about the safety of healthcare workers in Nigeria.
