President Bola Tinubu has condemned the recent attacks by gunmen in Plateau and Kaduna states, describing them as “barbaric and unacceptable”. The attacks, which occurred in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, Plateau State, and Kahir village, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, resulted in the deaths of several people and the abduction of others, including wedding guests.
Tinubu has directed security agencies to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and curb the spread of misinformation that could escalate tensions. He also commended the efforts of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani in managing the crises and supporting rescue operations.
The President reaffirmed that security agencies are actively addressing the situation and stressed the importance of public cooperation in maintaining peace and protecting lives and property. He cautioned sections of the media against suggesting that the attacks were religiously motivated, emphasizing that such narratives could further inflame tensions.
Tinubu expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while reiterating the government’s commitment to strengthening security operations across the country. “Our government is currently acquiring more sophisticated equipment to enable our security agencies to track and smash criminals, in real time, wherever they are,” he said.
The attacks have drawn widespread condemnation, with the Christian Association of Nigeria describing them as “unacceptable” and a “grim reflection of the country’s worsening security situation”. The Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area, while the University of Jos has suspended examinations due to the security situation.
The security measures being taken to prevent such attacks in the future include increased surveillance and patrols in vulnerable areas, as well as efforts to address the root causes of the violence. The international community has also expressed concern over the attacks, with the United Nations calling for an immediate end to the violence and accountability for those responsible.
The government has assured citizens that it is doing everything possible to ensure their safety and security, and has urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
