The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported successes in its efforts to combat drug trafficking in Nigeria. The agency has intercepted several shipments of illicit substances, including methamphetamine and opioids, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
This development is a testament to the agency’s commitment to curbing the spread of illicit drugs in the country.
Two individuals, Friday Ehianuka and Christian Agbonhese, were arrested for attempting to smuggle tramadol to Italy. Ehianuka concealed 2,698 pills in skin-lightening body cream containers, while Agbonhese hid 28,470 pills in winter jackets. The arrests were made possible through the agency’s intelligence gathering and surveillance efforts.
The NDLEA also seized 1kg of Loud, a strong strain of cannabis, shipped from the United States, and 158 grams of methamphetamine bound for New Zealand. Additionally, the agency recovered 21,737 bottles of codeine-based syrup during a raid in Lagos.
These seizures are a significant blow to the drug trafficking networks operating in the country.
Several suspects were arrested in connection with these seizures, including individuals in Kano State, Naibawa Gabas, and Adamawa State. The NDLEA has intensified its War Against Drug Abuse sensitisation campaigns in schools, worship centres, and communities across the country.
The agency’s chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, commended officers involved in the arrests and seizures, urging them to continue their efforts in combating drug trafficking.
The NDLEA’s efforts are a step in the right direction towards a drug-free Nigeria. However, the agency acknowledges that more needs to be done to address the issue of drug trafficking and abuse in the country.
The agency has therefore called on citizens to support its efforts by reporting any suspicious activities to the authorities.
