The Oyo State Police Command has announced the successful re-arrest of a suspected kidnapper who escaped from police custody, sparking public concern and protests in the affected community. The swift action taken by the police has been welcomed by residents, who are breathing a sigh of relief.
The suspect, identified as Ayomide Kareem, 25, was recaptured on March 17, 2026, at around 11:30 p.m. by operatives attached to the Ojongbodu Area Command. Kareem was intercepted at Irepo Junction, Ojongbodu Division, while trekking suspiciously, and was later confirmed to be the same suspect who escaped from Jobele Division on March 10, 2026.
According to sources, Kareem was being held in connection with a kidnapping case, and his escape had raised concerns about the security measures in place at the police station. However, the police have assured the public that the suspect is now in custody and is cooperating with investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Femi Haruna, had ordered an intensive manhunt to ensure the suspect’s prompt re-arrest following the incident. The police command has also initiated a comprehensive disciplinary process against officers found wanting, including the redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Jobele Division.
