The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has inaugurated Environmental Sustainability and Green Border Ambassadors at the Command Secondary School football field in Idiroko, Ogun State, as part of efforts to promote environmental responsibility and community development in border areas.
Speaking during the official inauguration, the Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller OO Afeni, welcomed the National President of COWA, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, and her entourage to the command. He described the visit as historic and symbolic, noting that the initiative reflects COWA’s commitment to environmental sustainability, welfare of customs families, and development of communities around border corridors.
Afeni said the Green Border initiative aligns with global and national efforts to encourage environmental protection while maintaining a balance between trade facilitation, border security, and environmental preservation. He added that the Ogun I Area Command remains committed to strengthening partnerships with host communities to ensure peace, security, and prosperity along the borders.
He commended the COWA National President for her visionary leadership, noting that the association has expanded beyond its traditional humanitarian role to embrace sustainability and ecological stewardship. The controller also appreciated the executive members of the Ogun I Chapter of COWA for their dedication in mobilizing members and ensuring that the vision of the national body is effectively implemented at the grassroots level.
Afeni reaffirmed the command’s support for all COWA programmes aimed at promoting welfare, empowerment, and sustainable development, stressing that a greener border environment is beneficial to both the community and the operational mandate of the Nigeria Customs Service.
He expressed optimism that the initiative would leave a lasting impact on the environment and the people of the border communities.
