Former students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), in Ondo State, are still grappling with the issue of delayed academic certificates, with some waiting for up to 12 years. The affected graduates, who completed their programs between 2014 and 2021, claim the delay is hindering their academic pursuits and career advancement opportunities.
Adeniyi Fadeyi, one of the protesters, expressed frustration, stating he completed his clearance process in 2019 but is yet to receive his certificate. “In April 2025, I went to the school to obtain my certificate, but I was told there was no paper to print it. Since then, nothing has changed, and we are still waiting,” Fadeyi said.
Aina Waremi, another protester, shared her ordeal, saying, “I have travelled from Lagos to the school more than five times just to collect my certificate. Each time, I am given one explanation or the other, but at the end of the day, I return home without it.”
The school’s spokesperson, Olumide Olugosi, attributed the delay to unavailable printing materials, stating that new batches of certificate materials have been ordered and will be processed once they arrive.
The protesters are calling on the Ondo State government to intervene and resolve the issue, which has become a major concern for the institution’s alumni. “We are not asking for much, just our certificates. We have paid our dues, attended classes, and completed our programs. It’s our right to receive our certificates,” said Olawale Julius, another protester.
The situation highlights the challenges faced by Nigerian students and graduates, where certificate forgery and delays are common issues affecting many.
The students’ plea for help has sparked concern among Nigerians, with many calling for urgent action to address the issue. Social media platforms are flooded with messages of support for the affected students.
As the days turn into weeks, the affected students remain hopeful that their certificates will be issued soon.
The Ondo State government is yet to respond to the protesters’ demands, leaving many wondering what the future holds for these students.
