Nigerian football is mourning the loss of one of its legends, Henry Nwosu, who passed away on March 14, 2026, at the age of 62.
Nwosu, a key member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad, died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, Lagos, after a five-day battle for his life.

The news of Nwosu’s passing was confirmed by fellow ex-international Segun Odegbami, who described him as the “Youngest Millionaire”. Odegbami revealed that Nwosu passed away at 4:00 a.m. after being in intensive care since Wednesday.
“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven,” Odegbami wrote.
Nwosu’s contributions to Nigerian football are immeasurable. He earned 60 appearances for the Super Eagles and played for several Nigerian teams, including New Nigeria Bank F.C. and Stationery Stores F.C.
He also represented Nigeria in multiple tournaments, including the 1988 summer Olympics. Nwosu’s skills on the pitch were renowned, and he was known for his exceptional midfield prowess.
After retiring from active football, Nwosu transitioned into coaching and youth development, serving as an assistant coach for Nigeria’s national teams, including the 2008 Olympic team that won a silver medal. His dedication to the sport and his passion for nurturing young talent have left a lasting impact on Nigerian football.
