The Lagos State leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has launched a scholarship support initiative aimed at assisting the children of commercial drivers currently studying in universities.
The initiative was introduced by the Lagos State NURTW leader, Mustapha Adekunle Sego, as part of efforts to strengthen welfare support for members of the union across the state.
Under the programme, each beneficiary will receive ₦500,000 to support their university education. Speaking on the initiative, Sego said commercial drivers play a vital role in keeping Lagos moving daily, stressing that the union has a responsibility to support their families and invest in the future of their children.
“Our drivers work tirelessly every day to keep Lagos moving, and it is only right that we support their families and invest in the future of their children,” he said. Sego also used the opportunity to appreciate members of the State Executive Council of the union, noting that many of the key decisions taken under the current leadership were reached collectively.
“I want to sincerely appreciate my State Executive Council members because most of the decisions we are taking in this administration are done collectively. Their cooperation, advice, and commitment have been very important in helping us move the union forward,” he stated.
The NURTW leader further thanked union members across Lagos State for their unity and support, saying the cooperation received from members has helped strengthen the leadership’s efforts to improve welfare within the union.
He noted that many members had long expected meaningful welfare programmes and assured that the current leadership is committed to turning those expectations into reality.
According to him, the scholarship initiative is only one of several welfare programmes the union plans to implement. “We will continue to prioritize welfare, discipline, and proper management across all NURTW activities in Lagos State.
This scholarship initiative is just one of many steps we will continue to take to support our members and their families,” Sego added.
The launch of the scholarship scheme has been welcomed by members of the union, who praised the leadership for its commitment to improving welfare. The initiative is expected to benefit hundreds of students across the state, providing much-needed financial support to help them complete their education.
The NURTW leadership has vowed to continue working towards improving the lives of its members and their families, and the scholarship scheme is a key part of this effort.
