The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested Uzoma Valentine Ilomuanya, a 58-year-old fugitive drug lord wanted in Nigeria and the UK for over 15 years. Ilomuanya was apprehended in Lagos on February 23, 2026, following a high-stakes operation by the agency’s Special Operations Unit.
Ilomuanya’s arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the NDLEA’s fight against drug cartels. He was first arrested in the UK in 2003 for drug trafficking and sentenced to nine years, but served only two years after an appeal. He was rearrested in 2011 for drug-related offenses, granted bail, but fled to Nigeria.
In 2018, NDLEA operatives discovered two clandestine methamphetamine laboratories linked to Ilomuanya – one in Imo State and another in Lagos – and recovered 77.960 kilograms of methamphetamine and production equipment. He jumped bail and had been on the run until his recent arrest.
NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa commended the Special Operations Unit for their professionalism and diligence in tracking down Ilomuanya, reiterating the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks.
The arrest has sent shockwaves through the underworld, with many speculating about Ilomuanya’s network and accomplices. The NDLEA is likely to face challenges in uncovering the full extent of his operations.
