A student of the Lagos State University of Education, Akinyemi Omo Akin, was killed during a violent clash between the Oto-Awori and Ijanikin communities in Lagos on Saturday.
The incident has sparked outrage, with the National Association of Nigerian Students, Lagos chapter, demanding a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.
The NANS Joint Campus Council has criticized the Lagos State Police Command’s denial of responsibility for the student’s death, citing a lack of forensic evidence to support their claim. Eyewitnesses and community sources alleged that the deceased died from a stray bullet reportedly fired by police personnel.
The police had confirmed the death and stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the clash. The Commissioner of Police has directed a full-scale investigation into the incident.
The clash, which led to heavy traffic along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, is believed to have been sparked by a long-standing hostility between the two communities. At least three other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries during the clash.
The NANS has demanded a transparent and independent forensic investigation, including ballistic analysis, to determine the true source of the bullet. They have also called for immediate engagement between security agencies and LASUED management to strengthen safety protocols around student residential areas.
The student body has urged students of LASUED and youths across Lagos State to remain calm and law-abiding. The police have arrested seven suspects from both communities and are holding them in custody.
The incident highlights the growing insecurity in the region, and residents are living in fear. The police must take concrete steps to address the situation and ensure the safety of citizens.
The Lagos State government must also take responsibility for the safety of its citizens and work with security agencies to prevent such incidents from recurring.
