The speaker of the Osun state house of assembly, Adewale Egbedun, and 24 members of the state’s legislature have joined Accord Party. They declared their support for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election bid.
The defectors made their decision during a parliamentary meeting before proceeding to the Banquet Hall to meet the governor and top Accord leaders. Egbedun cited the persistent instability within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a reason for his defection.
Adeleke had formally joined Accord Party in December 2025, citing the need to continue his administration’s delivery of good governance and democratic dividends. The governor announced the defection of Moshood Adeoti, a former secretary to the state government, and his loyalists on Friday.
The fresh defection leaves the state assembly with only one opposition lawmaker, Femi Popoola of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Egbedun emphasized his commitment to the progress, unity, and sustainable development of his constituency and the state.
The speaker believes Accord provides a more stable, inclusive, and people-centred platform for him to serve. He urged supporters to join him in this new chapter, focusing on building on Osun State’s developmental strides.
Adeleke welcomed the defectors, saying their decision reflects growing confidence in his administration’s progress. He highlighted Adeoti’s commitment to grassroots development and the “Osun for Osun” approach aligning with his people-centered governance.
The governor expressed optimism about strengthening party structures from the grassroots to consolidate gains. The defection is seen as a boost to Adeleke’s re-election bid and Accord Party’s growth in Osun State.
The move has sparked interest in the state’s political landscape, with implications for the 2027 elections. Accord Party is positioning itself as a viable alternative in Osun State.
