The South-South leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have thrown their weight behind Rotimi Amaechi’s presidential ambition for the 2027 election.
Former Edo State overnor, John Odigie Oyegun, announced this on Friday during the ADC South-South leaders’ consultative meeting in Benin City, emphasizing Amaechi’s respect for regional leadership and consultation.
Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation, has argued that the party should field a southern candidate in line with the principle of power rotation, allowing the South to complete an eight-year tenure before power returns to the North.
He previously contested the APC presidential ticket in 2022, losing to President Bola Tinubu.
The ADC faces challenges, including a revised elections timetable that some say makes the 2027 race “almost impossible”. However, the party remains committed to its goals. Other notable aspirants for the ADC ticket include former vice president Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on different platforms.
Amaechi’s bid is seen as a significant move, given his experience as a two-term governor and federal minister. He has pledged to serve only a single four-year term, ensuring power returns to the North by 2031. This move is aimed at appeasing Northern power brokers.
The South-South endorsement is a boost to Amaechi’s campaign, with regional leaders praising his institutional knowledge and consultative approach. The ADC’s show of unity behind Amaechi could shape internal party dynamics as candidates gear up for the 2027 elections.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of regional equity and stability in Nigeria’s political landscape. Amaechi’s platform focuses on these issues, resonating with Southern Nigerians who believe power should remain in the South.
Odigie-Oyegun emphasized the need for peaceful political activities, urging authorities and stakeholders to promote stability and avoid violence. The ADC’s commitment to a credible and people-centered policy framework was also reiterated.
As Amaechi rallies the South-South, the country remains on edge, with insecurity and selective justice dominating headlines. The former minister’s experience and strategic approach position him as a strong contender for the ADC’s presidential ticket.
