Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has resigned, effective immediately, following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, February 23, 2026. The resignation is reportedly due to the nation’s deteriorating security situation, with recent incidents including the abduction of schoolchildren and persistent kidnappings along major highways.
Egbetokun, who was appointed IGP on June 19, 2023, had his tenure marked by controversy, including allegations of human rights abuses and criticisms over his handling of security challenges. His resignation paves the way for Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to take over as the new IGP.

AIG Tunji Disu is tipped to replace Egbetokun, having served as head of the Intelligence Response Team and Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and FCT, Abuja. Disu is known for his role in several high-profile operations, including the arrest of suspected kidnap kingpin Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, also known as Evans.
