At least 11 people lost their lives on Tuesday night when a massive tree collapsed on two commercial vehicles at Awhum Village Market Square in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The incident, which occurred around 8:45 pm, involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a Sienna minivan, both filled with passengers traveling from Old Park, Enugu, to villages within the Awhum/Okpatu axis.
According to a statement from the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the vehicles had stopped at the market square to drop off passengers when the tree, weakened by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and internal decay, suddenly fell on them. The impact left the vehicles crushed and trapped several occupants.
Police operatives from the 9th Mile Division, with assistance from community members, quickly responded to the scene and rescued four persons who were trapped in the wreckage. The rescued survivors were immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Sadly, 11 other victims were rushed to the hospital but were later confirmed dead by doctors. Their remains have been deposited in the mortuary for further procedures. The tragic loss has thrown the Awhum community into mourning, with families of the deceased struggling to come to terms with the sudden disaster.
The Commissioner of Police, while commiserating with the bereaved families and the Awhum community, described the event as a tragic and unfortunate occurrence. He urged residents and community leaders across Enugu State to take proactive steps in maintaining large or ageing trees, especially in public places like markets, motor parks, schools, and residential areas, particularly during the rainy season.
SP Ndukwe emphasized that regular inspection and maintenance of such trees could help prevent similar tragedies in the future. He noted that environmental hazards like this highlight the importance of community vigilance and timely intervention to avert disasters.
The incident has sparked conversations about public safety and environmental management, with many calling on local authorities to implement policies for tree maintenance and risk assessments in vulnerable areas. Residents expressed shock and grief, describing the scene as devastating and urging government intervention to support affected families.
Religious and community leaders have also joined in offering prayers for the departed souls and strength for their families, while appealing for calm and solidarity during this difficult time. They stressed the need for collective responsibility in ensuring safety and preventing avoidable tragedies.
As investigations continue, authorities have assured the public that they will work to determine all contributing factors to the incident and take necessary actions to prevent recurrence. The tragedy serves as a painful reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the need for constant vigilance in safeguarding lives.
