A police constable in Borno State, Alhaji Muhammad, has set a remarkable example of integrity, returning ₦2.6 million mistakenly transferred to his bank account. Muhammad’s selfless act has been hailed as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that honesty still thrives in the Nigeria Police Force.
Muhammad’s action has been praised by one Bello Jafar, who took to Facebook to commend the officer for his exceptional honesty and integrity. According to Jafar, Muhammad received the money in error from a Moniepoint customer but took immediate steps to ensure it was returned to the rightful owner, showcasing a rare level of moral fibre.
The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the development, saying that the state Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajeed, had invited Muhammad for a meeting to commend him for his action. Daso said Muhammad, who works in the insurance office of the Borno State Police Command, received the credit alert on Thursday but knew he was not expecting such payment, highlighting his exceptional awareness and integrity.
When he received the alert, Muhammad knew he was not expecting any particular money, Daso said. The next day, he took permission and went to his bank to complain that a certain amount of money was sent to him which he was not expecting, demonstrating a proactive approach to resolving the issue.
The bank later traced the source of the transaction to a UBA branch in Sokoto and contacted the manager. Muhammad was subsequently issued a consent form authorising the reversal of the funds to the rightful owner, bringing closure to the incident.
During his meeting with the commissioner, Muhammad detailed the steps he took to ensure the money was returned. When asked what motivated his action, Muhammad said he is a policeman, and he knows the type of negative notion a lot of people have about the police, highlighting his desire to improve the image of the force.
Muhammad’s honesty is a breath of fresh air in a country where corruption is often rife. His action is a testament to the fact that there are still honest and principled individuals in the police force who are committed to serving the public with integrity, and serves as a reminder that individual actions can have a profound impact on the reputation of institutions.
