The Hands of Solace Foundation has unveiled a long-term educational intervention aimed at strengthening primary education delivery in rural communities of Ogun State through strategic collaboration with the state government and local education authorities.
The initiative, which kicked off in Oke Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area, saw the foundation distribute learning materials to over 400 primary school pupils, marking the beginning of a broader plan to address structural challenges affecting basic education in remote areas.
During a visit to the Yewa South Local Government Education Authority in Ilaro, the foundation’s Spokesman, Mr. Segun Adekoya, said the intervention was designed to provide sustainable solutions rather than one-off support.
According to him, the foundation is taking steps to acquire acres of land in Oke Erinja for the construction of a standard primary school that will provide free education to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Adekoya explained that Hands of Solace Foundation is a collective of young Nigerian professionals who have chosen to reinvest their earnings into social development, with education identified as a critical entry point for community transformation.
He stated that Yewa South was selected based on research findings which showed limited access to quality schools and low parental engagement with formal education, particularly in hard-to-reach settlements.
He added that the foundation’s roadmap includes the establishment of both primary and secondary schools to ensure continuity in learning and reduce dropout rates.
“We are laying a foundation that will outlive us. Our goal is to create an educational ecosystem where children can learn without financial barriers,” Adekoya said.
Receiving the delegation, the Head of Department, Academic and School Services, Yewa South Local Government Education Authority, Mrs. Ogunleye Adedoyin, praised the foundation for aligning its intervention with the needs of the local education system.
She noted that many public primary schools in the area face serious infrastructural deficits, including shortages of chairs, classrooms, and protective learning materials, which often discourage effective teaching and learning.
Adedoyin acknowledged the efforts of the Ogun State Government in improving school facilities but stressed that partnerships with credible non-governmental organisations remain essential in bridging gaps in rural education.
She urged the foundation to sustain its intervention and encouraged other development-focused organisations to support similar initiatives in underserved communities.
Also speaking, the Head Teacher of YSLG Primary School, Mrs. Popoola M.A., described the intervention as timely, stating that it has improved pupils’ morale and renewed parents’ confidence in public education.
Teachers and pupils from the beneficiary schools expressed appreciation and called for the speedy implementation of the proposed school construction project.
