Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Dr. Supo Ayokunle, has described the growing foreign concern over Nigeria’s security challenges as a sign of hope, stressing that the continued bloodshed in the country must stop.
Ayokunle noted that when foreign nations begin to openly express concern about killings in Nigeria, especially attacks against Christians and other innocent citizens, it sends a strong message to the nation’s leaders that “enough is enough.”
He warned that failure by the government to decisively address insecurity could have serious international consequences, including loss of credibility and economic opportunities for the country’s leaders.
He made these remarks at a press briefing held on Monday, February 2, at the Conference Hotel, Abeokuta, organised by the Abeokuta Joint Baptist Association ahead of its annual crusade scheduled to commence on February 15.
The former CAN president expressed deep concern over what he described as years of unresolved killings and violence across the country, insisting that insecurity has been poorly handled for over 16 years.
According to him, attempts to justify the killings by arguing that both Christians and Muslims are affected do not address the real issue confronting the nation.
“The right thing to do is to stop the killings entirely. When nobody is being killed, there will be no accusations,” he said, describing the government’s position on insecurity as unreasonable and deeply troubling.
Ayokunle described recent international attention on Nigeria’s security crisis as a form of divine intervention, regardless of whether such concern is driven by sincere motives or political interests, noting that global focus has now been drawn to what he termed “senseless bloodletting.”
He urged Nigerians, especially Christians, not to relent in prayers, stressing that God answers prayers and will ultimately intervene to bring an end to evil in the land.
On the forthcoming crusade, he disclosed that the programme is themed “REST” and will be held at the open space behind the Moshood Abiola Stadium (MKO), Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State, featuring several gospel music ministers, including Oluwalonibisi, among others.
He said the programme is open to everyone irrespective of religious background, adding that God is interested in all humanity and desires to transform lives through the power of the Gospel.
“Come with your faith; your faith will make a difference. Jesus Christ is alive and He saves, heals, and delivers,” Ayokunle said, urging residents to invite friends and loved ones to experience the restoration power of Christ.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Abeokuta Joint Baptist Association, formerly known as Abeokuta City Churches,Revd Albert Oluwole delivered the welcome address, giving a brief background of the crusade and outlining activities lined up for the programme, while congratulating Ogun State on its 50th anniversary and welcoming Rev. Dr. Supo Ayokunle on behalf of the association and its members.
