Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi is still reeling from the devastating loss of his beloved father, Sunday Ndidi, who tragically passed away in a road accident in Umunede, Delta State. The news has sent shockwaves through the football community, with fans, teammates, and opponents alike mourning the loss of a remarkable man.
In a heartfelt tribute, Ndidi recalled the last phone call he had with his father, describing it as a painful farewell he didn’t fully realise at the time. “Eeraq you call me this morning with excitement in your voice but deep down na goodbye you dey tell me ,What about things we talked about, so we no go talk again Na only memories?…,” he wrote on Instagram, struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, died on Tuesday, leaving behind a legacy of love, pride, and dedication. His son Wilfred, who dedicated his first-ever goal for Nigeria to his father, remembered the proud moment when he scored and celebrated with the iconic Papilo dance, inspired by Sunday Ndidi’s admiration for former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo. “Even when I score my first national team goal I do that Papilo dance for you, but you just go like that EERAQ,” Ndidi added, lamenting his father’s sudden passing.
Ndidi’s club, Besiktas, confirmed the tragedy and expressed condolences to the midfielder and his family. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident,” the club said, wishing Ndidi and his family strength during this difficult time. “May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”
