The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Niger Axis, has issued a scathing condemnation of the brutal attack on Kasuwan Daji Market in Demo community, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, describing it as “heinous, barbaric, and a grave assault on humanity.”
In a strongly-worded press statement signed by NANS Niger Axis JCC Chairman Comrade Mustapha Yunusa MANDATE, the student leaders revealed that no fewer than 30 innocent persons — including women — were reportedly killed in the senseless assault on traders and shoppers going about their lawful business. “This is not just a security failure — it is a moral outrage,” the statement read.
NANS Niger Axis expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and standing in unwavering solidarity with the people of Borgu LGA during this time of profound grief. “Our hearts ache for the mothers, sisters, and children who have been robbed of their loved ones in cold blood,” said Comrade Mustapha.
The student union called on the Niger State Government and all relevant security agencies to urgently intensify efforts to secure the affected areas, enhance intelligence gathering, and deploy a sustained military and police presence to deter further attacks. “No community should live in fear of bandits striking at will,” NANS warned.
The association also demanded swift and uncompromising justice for the perpetrators, insisting that those responsible — regardless of affiliation — must face the full weight of the law. “Impunity is the fuel that feeds insecurity — it must end now,” the statement emphasized.
Recognizing the immediate needs of survivors, NANS Niger Axis appealed for urgent humanitarian assistance, including free medical care for the injured, food, shelter, clothing, and psychosocial counseling for traumatized victims and their families. “The government’s duty extends beyond security to compassion,” the union noted.
The statement reiterated that the protection of lives and property is a constitutional obligation of government at all levels. “Enough is enough — our markets, schools, homes, and streets must be safe zones, not killing fields. We will no longer accept excuses,” NANS declared.
NANS Niger Axis further announced plans to mobilize student volunteers and collaborate with civil society groups to organize peace vigils, blood donation drives, and relief collection points across Niger State campuses in the coming days. “We stand with the people — not just in words, but in action,” Comrade Mustapha affirmed.
