Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has thanked residents of the state for their continued support of his administration, assuring them that his government remains committed to building a prosperous and inclusive Ogun State.
The Governor stated this in his 2026 New Year broadcast on Thursday. He described Ogun State not just as a place on the map, but as a community united by shared goals, cooperation, and the desire for development.
According to him, the New Year offers another opportunity for government and citizens to work more closely together to achieve sustainable growth.
Governor Abiodun said progress is always achieved when citizens and government work together in trust and shared responsibility.
He reaffirmed that his administration is focused on economic diversification, infrastructure development, and human capital development. He said through reforms and targeted investments, the government is building an economy that creates opportunities for all and protects vulnerable groups.
The Governor added that his administration, guided by the “Building Our Future Together” mantra and the ISEYA Development Agenda, remains committed to transparent, disciplined, and people-oriented governance.
Governor Grants Clemency to 71 Inmates
As part of the New Year activities, Governor Abiodun granted clemency to 71 inmates in the state under the prerogative of mercy.
This included the early release of 46 inmates who had served most of their jail terms, the release of 19 inmates on death row on compassionate grounds due to age, ill health, or long years in custody, and the commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment for six inmates.
The Governor said the decision was aimed at rehabilitation and giving deserving individuals a second chance to return to society and live productive lives.
Economic Growth and Infrastructure Development
Governor Abiodun appreciated residents for their patience despite economic challenges in 2025, noting that Ogun State recorded significant economic growth.
He disclosed that the state’s Gross Domestic Product is estimated at ₦17 trillion, while Internally Generated Revenue increased from ₦52 billion in 2020 to ₦250 billion in 2025.
Among major projects completed by the administration are the Gateway International Airport, described as the fastest-built international airport in the world, and over 1,500 kilometres of roads constructed across the 20 local government areas. He also mentioned ongoing work on the Kajola and Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Ports.
Healthcare, Education, Agriculture and Social Development
The Governor listed improvements in healthcare, including the expansion of the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme to over 70,000 residents, renovation of health facilities, introduction of solar power systems, and the completion of the 250-bed Ogun State Medical Centre of Excellence.
In education, he said the government renovated science laboratories, rehabilitated technical colleges, and empowered over 39,000 people through skills acquisition programmes.
In agriculture, the administration supported over 33,000 farmers, mechanised more than 9,000 hectares of farmland, and established processing centres to boost food production and agro-industrial growth.
Women Empowerment, Jobs and Security
Governor Abiodun revealed that his administration disbursed ₦560 million in grants to women-owned businesses, supported over 54,000 women, and provided ₦600 million in grants to over 5,400 businesses to support job creation.
On security, he said the state government strengthened public safety by recruiting and equipping over 6,700 security personnel across Ogun State.
The Governor reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive governance and citizens’ participation in the 2026 budget process, assuring residents that his administration will continue to pursue sustainable development and shared prosperity.
