The Ogun State Government has expressed deep condolences to the families of victims of a tragic road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, which occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, within the Makun axis of the state.
The accident, involving a sport utility vehicle travelling from Lagos to Sagamu, claimed the lives of two male foreign nationals. Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle rammed into a stationary truck.
The deceased were confirmed dead at the scene, and their remains deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu, while Anthony Joshua and the driver were rescued and taken to hospital for medical attention.
Describing the incident as painful and unfortunate, the Ogun State Government commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed, as well as speed recovery for those injured.
In a statement e-signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser, Information and Strategy, the government urged motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations.
Security and road safety agencies were advised to intensify monitoring, especially during the festive period. The government assured the public that it would continue to work towards ensuring road safety in the state.
The accident has sparked widespread concern, given Joshua’s high profile in Nigeria and globally. Joshua, a two-time former unified world heavyweight champion, was involved in the crash while on holiday in Nigeria.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with authorities yet to release further details. The Ogun State Police Command had earlier confirmed the crash and promised updates.
The boxing world and Nigerians have sent wishes for Joshua’s swift recovery and condolences to the families of the deceased.
