World-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a devastating road accident today in Makun, Ogun State, along the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The vehicle carrying Joshua, a Lexus Jeep with the number plate KRD 850 HN, reportedly collided with a stationary truck under unclear circumstances, leaving two people dead on the spot.
Joshua sustained minor injuries and was part of a two-vehicle convoy with his security detail following closely behind in a Pajero SUV.
Eyewitness Adeniyi Orojo stated that the accident happened just before Danco Filling Station in Makun, before Sagamu Interchange inward Ibadan axis of the road, around 11 am. “It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him,” Orojo said.
According to Orojo, the Lexus SUV had four occupants, with Joshua seated behind the driver. The passenger beside the driver and the person beside Joshua died on the spot.
FRSC officials arrived promptly, and Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, promised updates. “The passenger beside the driver and the person beside Joshua died on the spot,” Orojo said, describing the fatal crash.
Babaseyi confirmed the police were investigating, saying, “I’ve seen the videos too, but I will get back to you on it.” TRACE Commandant Akinbiyi Babatunde was unreachable for comment.
Joshua, a two-time former unified world heavyweight champion, has been wished a swift recovery by fans flooding social media. The investigation is ongoing, with causes of the crash still unclear.
The Ogun State Police Command will likely release further updates as the investigation progresses.
Joshua is currently on holiday in Nigeria after defeating Jake Paul in Miami. His team has yet to comment on the accident. The boxing world sends wishes for Joshua’s swift recovery.
The accident has sparked widespread concern, given Joshua’s high profile in Nigeria and globally.
