Ayo Fayose, former Ekiti State Governor, has released documents claiming Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde received N50 billion from President Bola Tinubu as aid for the January 2024 Ibadan explosion. Fayose alleges that only N4.5 billion was disbursed to victims, with the rest diverted for Makinde’s presidential ambitions.
The documents were released alongside a statement by Fayose, who emphasized that he doesn’t usually make public official government documents but felt compelled to do so to reveal the truth.
Makinde’s Chief Press Secretary, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, dismissed the allegations as unfounded and misleading, challenging Fayose to provide verifiable proof. “He who alleges must prove. Fayose should produce evidence for his claims,” Olarenwaju said.
The controversy surrounds Makinde’s meeting with Tinubu, where he discussed the explosion and sought federal support. Fayose claims Makinde selectively disclosed their conversation, revealing only parts that suited him.
The Ibadan explosion killed five, injured 77, and damaged 55 houses. Makinde’s refusal to support Tinubu in 2027 and rejection of an APC organization request in Oyo State have fueled speculation about motivations behind Fayose’s allegations.
Fayose, a PDP chieftain, has been vocal about his discontent with Makinde’s leadership and alleged ambitions. This latest development is seen as part of the ongoing political feud between the two governors.
Makinde’s supporters argue that Fayose’s allegations are baseless and lack concrete evidence, questioning his credibility and motives.
The federal government has not commented on the allegations, and it’s unclear if there will be an investigation into the matter.
The controversy has sparked heated debate among Nigerians, with many calling for transparency and accountability in the management of relief funds.
