An Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ogbon-Inu Taiwo Popoola, has died suddenly in Ebonyi State while attending a management meeting at the command headquarters in Abakaliki The incident occurred around 11 am on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the police force.
Popoola, who was the officer in charge of the State Intelligence Department, was rushed to the Police Medical Centre at the Police Headquarters in Abakaliki after developing breathing difficulties and gasping for air during the meeting. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was confirmed dead by doctors.
Preliminary medical findings indicated that the cause of death was cardiac arrest related to hypertensive heart disease. His remains have been deposited at the morgue of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki.
The police spokesperson in the state, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident, describing Popoola as a dedicated officer who served the Force with commitment and professionalism. “He was not sick before the incident. If he were sick, he wouldn’t have attended the meeting,” Ukandu said.
Colleagues of the late ACP have expressed shock and sadness at his sudden demise. “He was a pillar of strength and a committed officer,” a police source said. “His death is a big loss to the force.”
Popoola’s death has raised concerns about the health and wellbeing of police officers, particularly those in high-stress positions. The police force has lost a valuable officer, and his contributions to the service will be deeply missed.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has not yet released an official statement on the circumstances surrounding Popoola’s death, but the incident is expected to be investigated further.
