A 25-year-old student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, identified as Ayodele Peter, was shot dead by suspected cultists on Sunday, December 15, 2025, in the Opomulero area of Owo. The incident has sent shockwaves through the polytechnic community and raised concerns about cult-related violence in tertiary institutions.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants pretended to be visitors, lured Peter outside his residence, and shot him at close range. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where he was confirmed dead. The motive behind the attack is believed to be a reprisal linked to ongoing rival cult clashes.
The deceased, also known as “Don P,” was said to be mourning the loss of his mother, who passed away barely three weeks ago. His killing has sparked an outpouring of grief and anger among students and staff of the polytechnic.
The incident is linked to a violent clash that broke out on Thursday, December 12, 2025, during a birthday celebration allegedly organised by members of the Eiye confraternity on the polytechnic campus. The confrontation is said to have escalated in the days that followed, culminating in Sunday’s fatal shooting.
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and launched an investigation. Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property. One suspect has been arrested, and a manhunt is underway for others involved.
The killing has raised concerns about cult-related violence in tertiary institutions, with stakeholders calling for strengthened security measures and decisive action to curb cultism on campuses.
The Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Students’ Union has condemned the attack and demanded increased security presence on campus.
The incident highlights the need for authorities to take proactive measures to prevent cult-related violence and ensure student safety.
The polytechnic management has promised to cooperate with security agencies to investigate the incident and bring perpetrators to justice.
