A brutal attack rocked St. Andrews Anglican Church in Lilu community, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday, December 7, 2025, leaving two people dead, including the wife of the priest and several others injured.
The gunmen, who stormed the church premises in the early hours of Sunday, set fire to the church building, vehicles, and the priest’s house, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with victims being evacuated for urgent medical attention.
The Anambra State Police Command has condemned the attack, describing it as a “heinous and abominable act” that violates the community’s peace and fundamental freedoms. Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, assured the public that the police would relentlessly hunt down the perpetrators.
The attack is part of a recent surge in violence in Anambra State, with several incidents of gunmen attacking communities and killing residents.
The Lilu community, a border town between Anambra and Imo states, has been under the grip of gunmen for months, with residents repeatedly lamenting the deteriorating security situation.
The police command has intensified security operations in the area, deploying a Joint Security Team and strengthening surveillance. Residents are urged to remain calm and cooperate with investigators to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating that the police are following every lead to apprehend the attackers.
The attack has sparked concerns about the security situation in Anambra State, with calls for increased efforts to address the issue. The community is in mourning, with many residents expressing shock and outrage over the incident.
The police command has assured the public that no resource will be spared in ensuring that those responsible are apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law. The investigation is ongoing, with the police urging residents to provide any information that can aid the probe.
