The Taraba State Police Command has emphatically denied circulating claims that one of its officers was caught collaborating with militias in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, dismissing the allegations as “false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to incite unrest”.
In a statement issued Sunday by Acting Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Victor Mshelizah, the Command described the viral reports as _“pure misinformation”_ designed to undermine the Force’s credibility and sow discord.
According to the police, the officer in question was performing his lawful duties at Usmanu Outstation in Karim Lamido LGA when violent disturbances erupted in the area.
While residents understandably fled for safety, the officer remained at his post, demonstrating commitment. Shortly after, military personnel arrived to restore order and conducted a security sweep. Preliminary investigations revealed no evidence linking the officer to militias, weapons, or any criminal activity.
The Command, led by Commissioner of Police Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimeyin, emphasized that the officer was not apprehended with incriminating materials and is cooperating with an internal review for further clarity. “We will not tolerate baseless allegations aimed at tarnishing the reputation of hardworking officers,” the statement read.
The police urged the public to avoid speculation, stressing that such rumors could escalate tensions in an already sensitive region.
Mshelizah highlighted that the narrative appears part of a broader scheme to destabilize trust in security agencies. “We’re investigating the source of these false claims,” he warned, adding that legal action is being considered against those spreading the misinformation.
The swift spread of the rumor, largely via social media, has sparked concern over the unchecked flow of unverified information. “In times of insecurity, facts matter,” the Command noted, appealing for calm.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities directly to authorities rather than amplify unconfirmed reports.
The incident underscores growing scrutiny of security operations in Taraba, a state grappling with banditry and farmer-herder conflicts.
The police reiterated their commitment to neutrality and professionalism, vowing to protect communities while holding accountable any officers found culpable“but based on evidence, not hearsay.”
