President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced Sunday the successful rescue of all 38 worshippers abducted from Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Eruku, Kwara State, and 51 students from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, Niger State, following his decision to prioritize domestic security over a G20 summit in South Africa.
In a statement, Tinubu emphasized, “I cancelled my trip to coordinate security efforts at home. I will not relent every Nigerian has the right to safety, and we will secure this nation.” Operations were executed without ransom payment.
The November 18 Kwara abduction left three dead, with investigations ongoing. Niger State’s Papiri attack seized 303, leaving 253 still in captivity. Tinubu assured continuous monitoring of both cases.
Governor Abdulrazaq (Kwara) commended Tinubu’s leadership, acknowledging support from the DSS, Nigerian Army, NIA, and Police, with four tactical teams deployed to Kwara. Chief Press Secretary Rafiu Ajakaye relayed the governor’s gratitude.
Kwara State is cautiously reopening schools in five affected areas; Niger State’s remain closed. Pastor Bamidele Lawrence (CAC Eruku) expressed thanks, while worshipper James Ige praised the government’s response. Medical evaluations for freed victims are underway.
Security measures are intensified nationwide. Tinubu confirmed receiving real-time updates, with no disclosed proof-of-life or motives. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) lauded the “swift action.”
The presidency reiterates commitment to addressing insecurity, planning victim support, and reinforcing safety protocols. The incidents underscore Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
