The Ogun State Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, has intensified its security operations across the state, ensuring stronger coverage in areas considered prone to criminal activities.
The Corps Commander, Brigadier General Alade Adedigba (rtd), revealed this during an interactive media parley with journalists in Abeokuta on Thursday.
According to Adedigba, Amotekun operatives are now strategically deployed to highways, rural communities, schools, urban centres, forest reserves, and key government facilities.
He credited this achievement to the consistent support of the Ogun State Government, particularly in the areas of manpower recruitment and the provision of critical logistics.
Highlighting the agency’s enhanced operational capacity, the Corps Commander disclosed that Amotekun currently boasts over 50 operational vehicles and 75 motorcycles to strengthen mobility.
He added that the Corps has stationed personnel across 22 tertiary institutions and 11 vocational centres in the state. These deployments, he noted, have been made possible through the state government’s commitment to equipping and funding the security outfit.
Adedigba emphasized that Amotekun’s core mandate is safeguarding the lives and property of residents rather than competing with other security agencies. By law, he explained, the Corps does not have prosecutorial powers and must hand over suspects to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
However, he noted that steps are being taken to review the Ogun State Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps Law, 2020, to strengthen its operations.
“Earlier this year, we resubmitted a new draft bill for Amotekun to the Ministry of Justice. The Ministry is reviewing it and very soon, it will get to the Ogun State House of Assembly for passage and eventual assent by the Governor.
But I must stress that we are not in competition with any other agency. Collaboration is what matters, and our priority remains the safety of Ogun State,” he said.
Also addressing journalists, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, AIG Olusola Subair (rtd), commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his proactive approach to security management.
He observed that the state is far safer today compared to a few years ago when issues such as cultism and violent crimes were more rampant in areas like Abeokuta, Sagamu, and Sango-Ota. He credited the improvement to effective synergy among security agencies and the governor’s unwavering support.
Subair further pointed out that the relative peace and stability in Ogun State have boosted investor confidence. “If you travel from Abeokuta to Sagamu interchange, you will notice new industries springing up daily.
This shows that Ogun State is safe and secure, making it an attractive hub for investment,” he added.
The media parley also had in attendance the Ogun State Accountant General, Mr. Tunde Aregbesola, and former Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Edward Ajogun (rtd), who both applauded the government’s investments in security infrastructure as a critical driver of peace and socio-economic development in the state.
