The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has taken a bold step to curb fake journalism and promote professionalism with the inauguration of the Ogun East Independent Chapel and its pioneer executive members.
The ceremony, held on Tuesday at the NUJ Secretariat Hall, Iwe-Iroyin, Abeokuta, officially recognized the new chapel as part of the union’s structure in the state.
In his address, State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Wale Olarenwaju, said the chapel was established not only to ensure inclusiveness but also to restore credibility and integrity to journalism in Ogun East.
He noted that the menace of fake news and unprofessional conduct has been threatening the image of the profession, hence the importance of the new body.
Representing the NUJ National President, National Ex-Officio, Comrade James Sowole, described the development as a significant move toward sanitizing the media space. He commended the initiative and urged the new leaders to uphold ethical values in their practice.
The State Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Adigun, who administered the oath of office, reminded the executives of their duty to maintain discipline, transparency, and synergy with the state council.
Those sworn in as pioneer leaders of the chapel include: Comrade Oluseun Oduneye (Chairman), Comrade Charles Adegbite (Vice Chairman), Comrade Funmi Sulodu (General Secretary), Comrade Daniel Johnson (Treasurer), and Comrade Ademola Ogunlana (Assistant General Secretary).
With its inauguration, the Ogun East Independent Chapel is expected to serve as a strong platform for credible journalism, professional recognition, and collective action against unethical practices in the media industry.
