Tragedy struck the quiet community of Onitasin in Imobi, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, when a herd of elephants reportedly strayed from a government forest reserve and fatally attacked a farmer, identified as Musa Kalamu.
The tragic event caused outrage and fear in the community after a disturbing video surfaced online showing the lifeless body of the victim, also known as “Kala,” sustainable visible wounds consistent with a wild animal attack.
In the video, horrified residents could be heard lamenting the state of insecurity posed by the animals.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Hon. Taiwo Oludotun, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, saying government officials were already en route to the affected area to assess the situation and restore order.
“Yes, we are aware and we are already on our way to the community,” Oludotun said.
Also confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, revealed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ogbere received a distress call from the community on Sunday, July 28, 2025, at about 4:20 p.m.
According to him, “The DPO Ogbere received information from the Itasin community that elephants escaped from the government reserve and attacked one Musa Kalamu, who sadly died while being rushed to the hospital.
“Officers of the Ogun State Forestry Department were immediately contacted to contain the situation and prevent further attacks. Calm has since returned to the area”, he said.
A community member exclaimed: “This is Kala, he was attacked by the elephants at Onitasin. You can see the marks of the attack all over his body, with parts of his intestine outside.
“The government should please come to our aid — the problem with these elephants is too much in our community,” he added.
