Abeokuta, Ogun State – The Chairman, Committee on Education, Information, Youth and Sport in Abeokuta South Local Government, Hon. Juwon Sanyaolu, on Sunday lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for the successful hosting of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U18 and U20 Combined Championships in Abeokuta.
The continental sporting event, which drew to a close on Sunday, July 20, brought together over 500 young athletes from across Africa.
Originally scheduled to hold in Oran, Algeria, the championships were relocated to Abeokuta due to logistical challenges in the North African country.
Hon. Sanyaolu, who also serves as the Councilor representing Ward 2 in Abeokuta South, described the hosting of the competition as a monumental achievement for Ogun State and a clear signal of Nigeria’s rising stature in African sports.
He noted that the successful organization of the event not only elevated the profile of Abeokuta as a sports destination but also showcased the capacity of the state to handle international tournaments with excellence.
Sanyaolu stated, “The CAA Championships have shown that with the right leadership and collaboration, we can transform Ogun State into a hub for youth development through sports.
“This is a turning point for our young athletes and our sports infrastructure”.
The Councilor praised President Tinubu for his unwavering support for youth-focused initiatives and the sports sector, describing the President as a visionary leader who understands the unifying power of athletics.
He also commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his steadfast commitment to grassroots development and his efforts in ensuring that Abeokuta was fully prepared to host athletes and officials from across the continent.
Sanyaolu then extended his appreciation to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), noting that his coordination and technical guidance played a vital role in the smooth execution of the event.
“This collaboration between the federal, state, and local governments shows what is possible when leadership is focused on progress,” he said.
“The impact of this championship will be felt for years to come as we see more young people inspired to take up sports professionally.”
He however urged all stakeholders to build on the momentum created by the event and invest more in facilities, training, and competitions that will keep Nigeria on the path to sporting greatness.
